A Letter from the Editors:
Hey y’all!
Well, it finally happened—The Rag got a newspaper box! Shoutout Mello Mansion. We spent the weekend spray-painting and doodling over it. We tried not to breathe in any fumes, but if next month’s issue is particularly inventive, you’ll know why.
We’re working with local bookstores this week to find a good home for The Rag, so be on the lookout for an update!
January’s is a tech-heavy issue: Chuck gives a thorough tutorial about “How to Have Fun on the Web” with the thesis that the Web 1.0 internet where “information could be free, unlikelies could connect, organization could be made easy and equitable” never died. “You just have to put in the elbow grease now to find it.” That rundown is followed by Uma Green’s “The Great Tech-xodus,” which covers tech companies’ speedy invasion of (and speedier exit from) Austin with the theory that Big Tech’s success lives and dies by cultural attitudes towards tech. For those of you who’ve set New Year’s resolutions about phone addiction and whatnot, Kira has a quiz called “Which Phone Should You Own.” Dig deep into your psyche, unpack your relationship with your family, and try to stay out of woke jail.
But The Rag is nothing if not varied, and we’ve got other topics for any Ragamuffins living off the grid. On a more serious note, guest writer Abe Dozier discusses the tragedy at Camp Mystic, the legal fallout, and the impact on Kerrville’s residents, which he covers with remarkable insight and tact.
Need a pick-me-up after that one? Us too! Nick the Well-Endowed tells students how to nail your spring semester (and maybe your TA), Morgan Bart writes about a superhero for Austin (not the one we need, but certainly the one we deserve), and Ava Hosseini delivers hard-hitting Yelp reviews in her first installment of the Bar Beat (more to come! Austin pubs, hide your men). Some abstract FMK’s and local events to round us out, and we’ve pulled together what we think is our strongest issue to date. Let’s hope we can keep it going! (jk. we’re all doing thesis projects this semester. If ChatGPT isn’t editor-in-chief by year’s end, I’m calling it a win).
In the spirit of 2016, be sure to like and share this post with anyone who’d like it. It really helps us out :) And buy us a few sheets of paper for February if you’d like!
Cheers!
